M is for Mondays...and Music: Musical Memory - Smashing Pumpkins Tonight, Tonight

8th Grade Homeroom Photo: 1995-1996

Musical Memory: Smashing Pumpkins' Tonight, Tonight
Rochester Catholic School, Rochester, NH circa June 1996

Oh 8th grade. What a terrible time. Above is my eighth grade home room picture. I'm in the front row, sitting on the floor on the left. The less surly girl. (Can we talk about how awesome my posture is?! Go ballet training!)

Unlike my previous Musical Memory posts - there is no huge story here. Per tradition, the 7th graders DJed the 8th grade graduation dance. The last song rolled around, and immediately everyone was pissed that it wasn't Stairway to Heaven. (Yes, even at a mid-nineties middle school dance, this was a standard last dance expectation). I was a giant dork in 8th grade - so I was relieved when my friend, Brian Deveau, swooped in and asked me to dance. (Nevermind that there were 29 boys in my class and 8 girls - so my odds were fantastic - I still thought I was an untouchable).

In retrospect - I am glad that that 7th grade DJ did not play Stairway. Tonight, Tonight was so fitting for that moment in time - and had it been Zeppelin, this dance might've blurred together with the many school dances that came before and after it. This song always propels me back to 8th grade, dancing in the cafeteria with Brian, and for four minutes and nineteen seconds, feeling a little bit cooler.
