M is for Mondays...and Music: I'll Bake Bread with You

M is for Mondays and Music

Musical Memory: Boyz II Men's - I'll Make Love to You
Cate's House - Mid 90's, 6th or 7th Grade

When I was in 7th grade, thereabouts, I was invited to a sleepover at my friend Cate's house. I remember that our clique had specifically gathered for the purpose of watching Beaches, which, in retrospect, seems a simultaneously perfect and horrible movie choice to be viewed by gaggle of hormonal middle school girls.

But, I digress...

As young girls do - we were constantly making up alternate lyrics to popular songs. And that night - Cate came up with "I'll Bake Bread With You" sung to the tune of Boyz II Men's then popular hit single "I'll Make Love to You."

Cate turned these lyrics...

"I'll make love to you,
like you want me to,
and I'll hold you tight,
baby all through the night..."

...into...

"I'll bake bread with you,
like you want me to,
and I'll roll it right,
baby all through the night."

"Throw your clothes on the floor, and I'll take my clothes off too..."

became...

"Throw your dough, on the floor, and I'll throw my dough down too."

Cate sang the new lyrics with a serious game face and conviction, and peppered her performance with appropriately dramatic interpretive dance moves and gestures.

And that's why whenever I hear "I'll Make Love to You," I always laugh a little bit, and think of cute, freckle-faced Cate, decked out in pjs, dancing in her kitchen, dramatically spiking balls of imaginary dough onto the floor.

Thanks for the memory, Cate!
