Well, this may seem ironic, especially in light of yesterday's post bemoaning shopping and crazed capitalism, but I love to make Christmas lists. Big ones.
They're mostly items from indie businesses, I swear!
This year's list is the smallest one ever. It's under forty items! As I get older I'm trying pare my wishlists down to a more realistic level. (Not that I'm at all expecting 40 presents).
Here are pictures and links to all of the loveliness that I am coveting this holiday season.
My list is pretty predictable, if you know me well, and can be broken into a few categories.
:: Crafty Type Books and Zines ::
:: Clothing ::
:: Accessories: The usual giant earrings and miscellaneous bling ::
:: Dance ::
And a few miscellaneous, such as...
Those Converse are so cool!
Will Santa bring it all? Most likely, not, but I'm totally okay with that!
Today I'm thankful for the things that really matter. Love. Family. Shelter. Food. Health. I am so lucky to have these things already. What are you thankful for today?

Black Friday=DEATH
Literally.
I am so sickened by this story - it's just gross. What has society come to?!
Yesterday a Wal-mart employee in New York was trampled to DEATH by throngs of holiday shoppers trying to gain entry to the store on Black Friday. You can read the full story over at the New York Times.
This is the most unbelievable quote to me:
Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like "savages."
"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling `I've been on line since yesterday morning,'" she said. "They kept shopping."
This just confirms for me that I will never go shopping on Black Friday, EVER!
You know what I did yesterday?
I slept in. I cleaned my living room in preparation for holiday decorating. I ate leftovers. I worked on gifts for my family.
I subscribe to holidays that bring times of happiness, warmth and comfort to my home. Corporate created, mass-marketed Christmas has reached a new all time low - and you know what? I'm not buying it. It's rubbish and bullshit!
I certainly don't expect that you or I have made our last trip to the mall. The sales rack at Old Navy certainly makes me smile. However, a trip to pick up a couple of things and a hemorrhaging credit card from Christmas induced hysteria are two very different animals.
I don't even know how to end a post like this. This story is just...so discouraging.
Sigh.

How was yours?
Mine was delicious! My mom outdid herself once again. I took very few pictures, because I was so busy devouring it all, but here are some of the food highlights:
:: My dad carving up the bird ::

This thing was huge! That's half the bird. He was 28 lbs total. My mom cut him in half and saved the rest for a rainy day, mostly because he wouldn't fit in the oven!!!
A repeat from last year, I contributed two Nutmeg Maple Cream Pies.

Almost as exciting as the dinner was getting to meet my 10 day old little grand-niece, Isabelle!
:: I love how excited my dad gets about babies and little kids - look at the grin on his face! ::

:: She was so tiny! She weighs just over six pounds! ::

:: And, of course, I logged in some significant cuddle time. ::

:: My nephew Zach, the papa ::

Like any good Thanksgiving, we all succumbed to food coma induced exhaustion at the end of the day, as demonstrated superbly here by my brother, Mike.

I give thanks for a good day. And leftovers.
P.S. Want to see more Isabelle cuteness? Check out my Thanksgiving 2008 set on Flickr.

Baby Central
I know, I know!
You're all like..."Where's the crafting? The knitting? The yummy cooking? The borderline insane Christmas preparation?" And I keep barraging you with adorable baby pictures. It is indeed baby central in our family right now though!
Check out these cute pictures that my ex-SIL sent me today of my cutie grand-niece, Izzy:
Sleepy and Serious

Cuddled!

And my absolute favorite <3

That sleepy smile melts me! How much more adorable could you possibly get? Gah!
The bakery has been INSANITY the past few days, as you could imagine with Thanksgiving arriving tomorrow. All I can say is that I don't ever think I want to see a dinner roll ever again (HAH - we'll see how long that lasts)! We baked off and bagged thousands of rolls in the past two days. Not to mention pies, pies and MORE PIES. I have the next few days off which is very exciting. I think I'll need the rest!
Today I'm thankful the first batch of baked oatmeal of the year. Mmm, mmm good! What are you thankful for today?

Alpaca - Somebody Bring Me a Drool Cup!
Seriously...

This is the super pretty, super soft yarn that I mentioned briefly in Saturday's post. I purchased it at The Yarn Basket in Portsmouth. My visit there was the first since they moved their location and changed ownership, and it was a very happy visit. I had not visited the Yarn Basket in years, because I had a nasty experience with one of the staffers there. That, joyously, was not repeated this time around and I came home with two skeins of this awesome Baby Alpaca Brush from Plymouth Yarns.
For you fiber nerds out there, here are some specifics:
80% Baby Alpaca 20% Acrylic
50 grams 110 yards
Color 1725 Dye Lot 557
$7 Per Skein
I'm halfway through a pair of Toasty Fingerless Mitts that I'm making for my 14 year old niece Caitlin. I wanted something hip, but a little luxurious in the yarn department, and I think that these will fit the bill. If any of you knitters out there need a last minute gift pattern, oh boy is this ever it. It only took me two nights to get through the first mitt, and I'm sure that some of you probably knit faster than I do. It's a quickie and a goodie that's for sure!
Today I'm thankful for new beginnings. I started an exercise program today - we'll see if I can stick to it. I'm thankful for Suzi Blu and all of her glorious inspiring YouTube videos. I'm thankful for an amazing weekend OFF. What are you thankful for today?

Meet and Greet
Remember this little guy? Well he's three months old now and I still hadn't gotten a chance to meet him. Matt and I were finally able to drive down for a little breakfast meet and greet today.
This is me saying "Hello, little face!"

Aunty snuggles are good. Aaron had no problem settling right in!

Look at that Charlie Brown head! So soft and sweet!

I couldn't believe how tiny he still is. It made me glad, for a bit of a funny reason, because the 0-3 month sized hat that I knit for him way back was actually a little big on him. Phew! I'm glad he'll get to wear it for more than a day!
My brother made a seriously scrumptious breakfast for us and I promptly went home and fell straight asleep by reason of food coma. How much better could a Sunday get, really?
Today I'm thankful for baby snuggles, baby smell and tiny feet. I'm grateful for midday naps. I'm grateful for kitty snuggles. What are you thankful for today?

Holiday Farmer's Market!
Today's Holiday~Farmer's~Market was all about...
Potatoes, turnips, greens, sustainability, kale, lemon spinach, lettuce, honey, maple sugar candy, maple ice cream, maple coated walnuts, wine, spiced pecans, friends, delicious samples galore! community, sustainability, agriculture, riches, carrots, lamb burger, hot lamb sausage, smoked mozzarella, farm cheddar, shallots, popcorn and yogurt...and then a bonus trip to falalo, the yarn basket, mmm baby alpaca.
My friend, Liz, from Riverslea Farm put it best when talking about the market. She said, "Doesn't it make you feel rich?"
It does. I feel so blessed that this is where I live.
If you are local - and you missed out - (what the hell is wrong with you, really?!) - you can check out the second Holiday Farmer's Market on December 20th, 9-2pm. Check out Seacoast Eat Local for details.
Me=Exhausted.

The Geek+Nerd T-shirt?!
Oh my goodness, I've been quoted on a t-shirt...that's actually available for sale...for people to wear!
Let me back up.
Awhile ago I was a contributor to an excellent little book called Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure. My entry was chosen from thousands left at SMITH Magazine's website. I entered for the pure fun of creating a six-word memoir for myself - and was totally surprised when I was actually picked to be in the book.
This is my six word memoir:
She danced, and did little else.
The book is super fun - and would make a great stocking stuffer for someone that likes quotes.
So about that t-shirt.
I received an e-mail from the publisher the other day, and it turns out that SMITH mag has teamed up with Spreadshirt to create Six Word Memoir T-shirt. Mine is right here: She danced, and did little else T-shirt.
How exciting is that?! You can see many of the other memoirs at the site, as well as create your own custom six-word memoir to sport on a t-shirt if you like. I think that's pretty nifty!
Challenge for the day: Write a six word memoir for yourself and if you'd like to share leave it in the comments below!
P.S. Thank you for all of the kind words left in yesterday's comments. I am so thankful for friends like you.

*CHRISTMAS SPOILER ALERT FOR MATT - DO NOT READ*
Tubey :: Finished
This took me over a month to complete on size 0 needles, but it was totally worth it. I'm obsessed with how fine the gauge is.

The heel makes me happy.

Ta-da!

Raveled
I hope my hubby loves them. Of course I made them out of necessity, and he went and bought twelve pairs of socks whilst these were in the making. Oh well!
:::
On a side note, today is Liam's third birthday. I feel sad, but not overwhelmingly so like I used to. I still miss him every day.
:::
Today I feel thankful for all that there is to be happy for in my life. The scent of vanilla filling my kitchen. Warmth. The lingering taste of good coffee. This space to write about it all. Thank you. What are you thankful for today?

It's Oh So Quiet - Shhh Shhh
Okay peeps - I've been crafting! Quite a bit in fact! I just finished a pair of socks for Matt, that took me nearly a month to complete! It's been my sole crafting focus, hence the quiet blog. I didn't think the world needed a row by row play by play on man-socks! I'll happily share a FO picture tomorrow though!
As for today, I've done some quiet steady work on my Christmas ornaments for the annual swap. This was the scene in my kitchen this morning.

I think in the coming weeks that I might take a page from my buddy, Sonya, and offer you some more visual, less wordy stimuli. Does that sound okay?
Busily yours - G+N

Christmas, Christmas time is near!
Me I want a huuuuuuuula-hoop!
as sung ala Alvin and the Chipmunks
Okay I've got two Christmas goodies for you today...
First up, it's time for one of my favorite swapping events of the year!

Find all of the info you need to partake in the swappy goodness here.
Secondly, Corporate Free Christmas, a blog that I linked to a couple of weeks ago, posted a really great article on how to approach your Christmas list in a mindful way. The point of the post that really hits home for me is that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE CRAFTY TO HAVE A CORPORATE FREE CHRISTMAS! Jamie words things in an encouraging way that makes a corporate free holiday appealing. Go read it - enjoy!
That's it for today - off to do dishes! I know, my life is fascinating, right?!

Mail Love :: Flossy-P
Monday I received a fun package from my dear bloggy friend, Flossy-P. I was the lucky winner of a give-away she did a few weeks ago, the prize being this super cute brooch:

Before she sent it out to me, I took the chance to order a post card of her illustration "3 Piece." Flossy being sweet and awesome sent me a package stuffed with goodies!
Wrapped beautifully with my favorite illustration from her recent show, Affirmations at Artstream:

Amazing loot!

In addition to the brooch and the post card she added a little bundle of vintage buttons, a keychain, and extra post card and a lovely note. It most definitely made my day!
Thanks so much Flossy!
Today I'm thankful for wonderful blog friends. I'm thankful for my mom's tasty pesto that made for an easy and filling meal tonight! What are you thankful for today?

YES!
I just whooped!
And shouted!
Then cried tears and tears and tears of joy!
All while smiling from ear to ear.
Yes we can, President Obama. In fact, we just did.
I think it's pretty obvious what I'm thankful for today. What are you thankful for today?

Halloweeny 2008 Re-cap :: Amy Winehouse
I wasn't quite feeling the Halloween spirit this year, until a couple of days before hand. I just could not think of a good costume idea. Then one day it struck me - as I was belting along to a certain hot-mess chanteuse's cd at work. I dressed up as Amy Winehouse.
I am so more than proud of myself for pulling this off...
My hair, with the help of a wig I bought on Halloween clearance for $2, defied gravity:

I really got into the details, drawing on tattoos, faking a "monroe" piercing (silver bead+eyelash glue...it stayed on all night too), and a certain illicit substance stuck under my nose (flour and more eyelash glue).

The piece de resistance for me though was figuring out what to wear. I went against the slutty, red-carpet Amy look and opted for a grocery shopping t-shirt and jeans, being photographed by the paparazzi Amy. What t-shirt did I pull out of my closet?

My D.A.R.E. t-shirt from elementary school! I laughed so hard at the irony, and many, many people at the party thought it was a scream as well.
I tried my best to make awkward faces whenever anyone snapped a picture of me. Such a fun night.

I leave you with this hilarious Winehouse/Spears parody from Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders:
I'm grateful for a really fun Halloween! What are you thankful for today?

Local - It's just oh so good!
Thursday was such a lovely day off, and meandered along in the best of ways! My mum came over for our weekly crafting visit, and she surprised me with little samplings of cheese. She was on vacation last week, and drove up to Durham, Maine, with her boss, to check out Spring Day Creamery's offerings. My mom's boss, Lucy, is the owner's cousin. Food runs deep in that family!
Mum brought back a mini-spread that melted my cheese-snob heart!

From left to right we have a small wheel of brie, tomme and one of the best blues I've ever had in my life (and I am picky about my blue cheese)! She also brought back a cow's milk feta marinated in oil and herbs, not pictured here.
For you local foodies out there Spring Day Creamery does not currently have a website, but the owner, Sarah, may be contacted here:

After my mum left, I went on a little adventure to visit Jenness Farm to pick up a log of seaweed soap that I had ordered. It was a bit of a drive, but the trees were a beautiful sight to see as I drove along. Before I reached my destination I was lured into Emery Farm and picked up some cider and cider doughnuts there.
I got a little lost trying to get to Jenness Farm, but when I did get there it was a pleasant visit indeed! The owners have a beautiful farm house, and their cute goats make for a great welcoming committee. If you are local - you must make a visit to their store. It's open Wednesday through Sunday 10-6, and 10-6 everyday from Thanksgiving to Christmas. There shop is well stocked with soaps, shampoos, bath fizzes and beauty products of all sorts. They even carry goat's milk and fresh eggs! I couldn't stop at my soap order so I picked up a heavenly smelling French Vanilla soy candle. (As a side note for a quick peek at the benefits of soy candles vs. paraffin candles check out Soy vs. Paraffin). Also on a local note, the farm does a week-long open house festival the week after Thanksgiving. I'll post the details as the date approaches!
If you are not local Jenness Farm does ship their comprehensive offering of products via their website, it is definitely worth a few minutes of your time.
After that I called up my dad to see what he was up to, and headed over to my parents' house for dinner. My brother Mike and his girlfriend showed up and it was a regular little party!
Well - I must be off. I have many things to squeeze in today. Hopefully some cheesemaking (finally). Definitely some dressing up like a certain zombified celebrity...pictures to follow on that one I'm sure!
Today I'm thankful for downtime. We all need that don't we? What are you thankful for today?

Today I'm thankful for downtime. We all need that don't we? What are you thankful for today?
