Breaking New Grounds is the coffee institution in my life. This corner that it occupies used to be Cafe Brioche - a very special place in my childhood, that could occupy a whole other post, but now it is BNG (B.N.G, the Ba-neeg, Be-nug, etc.).
After a long day of teaching dance classes I drank a cup of yummy ginger peach tea and shared some laughs with my fellow teacher and friend, Jess. That was the highlight of my day - and that's all I have to share today!

Marinating

Look I was actually crafty. I cut out the black fabric and made those yo-yos too! I'm the picture of productivity I tell you!
I'm marinating on these fabric combinations. They'll eventually become a small gift for a friend I'll be meeting in real life in a couple of weeks!
I'm excited about this, and I can't go into this too much right now, because I don't know how often she reads my blog, but this particular thing I'm making is inspired by something that she made. That one little thought has gotten me all excited about making things inspired by other people's work. Which doesn't sound all that revolutionary, but it IS to me - and I'm not copying or anything like that. The final product is going to have an entirely different function than the inspiration! I'm simply borrowing color suggestions and pattern.
Now I feel like I can zoom my eyes over my Flickr favorites and get fresh inspiration! Love that!

Wiggle your big toe

Yesterday was definitely a bad day. Everything that everyone said to me seemed to make my brain throb. Here I Illustrated it for you:

It's best viewed larger here.
Today I was thinking that yesterday was just shite-tastic, as I like to say, and I was thinking of how I can do something to make that better. From my fabulous artistic rendering one might deduct that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed lately. I'm completely one of those artistic scatterbrained types that can't concentrate on anything in an environment that is so overwhelming, therefore I'm resolving to wiggle my big toe.
Have you all seen Kill Bill Vol. 1? I love that sequence when the Bride is trying to wiggle her toe. That's what I feel like I need to do...one thing at a time. Today I cleaned off the kitchen table and put a pretty table cloth on it. Ah, instantly the kitchen feels somewhat cleaner. I went to the grocery store and bought special gourmet things like fresh mozarella in water and prosciutto and the most crappy food like stuff alive Tastycake cupcakes. Came home, promptly ate four of said chocolate cupcakes, and I feel the psychosis slowly wearing away.
So today I'm feeling a little calmer, a little more zen, slightly more prepared to tackle things. As long as it's one thing at a time. Everything else is just going to have to wait it's turn.

Stressed
Lots of stress going on at work.
I came home and saw this on Flickr, and bought it immediately. I feel mildly better.
AHHHHHHHHH BLOGGER ATE MY POST! THERE WAS MORE TO SAY BUT SCREW IT!!!

Ahhh, I have no time to blog properly!
Off to the burlesque tonight - Matt's band is guesting with the Boston Baby Dolls. I'm excited! I've never been to a real live burlesque before!!!

Date Night - Momix!
Matt always tries to arrange a big, fancy "date night" as a gift for holidays and special occasions. This Christmas he bought me tickets to Momix's Greatest Hits show on tour in Boston. This dance company is amazing! They take full advantage of technical theatre and costume to create out of this world, illusion filled dance.
I found the preview for the show that I'll be seeing on YouTube. If you want to check it out - click play on the video below!

Catching up...
...with Year of Outfits posts...

(I'm a little mosaic addicted, it's just so easy!)
I've pretty much succumbed to the fact that January has been a decidedly non-crafty month for me. I apologize, dear readers, that this blog 365 days a year thing has kicked off to be about as interesting as doing your taxes. I swear that I'm mildly cool and occasionally creative. Really. I mean it.
Today was all about working on my resume for a job opportunity that's come up. I also visited my grandmother, who looks *much* better, and went to Stitch n' Bitch with my mom and her co-workers. Lot's of driving today...but a good day.

Thank you!
The good thoughts from across the universe must have done a little bit of good, because in a lovely turn of events the hospital decided that my Memere is well enough to go back to rehab! She likes it much better there, because she gets to get dressed in the morning and eat normal meals and be social with other people. I'm cautiously optimistic, a) because she IS 91 and b) there is still the threat that her heart will give out again, but at least for the time being she is able to be in a place where she is happier and more comfortable. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words and good thoughts!

Rough Day
My grandmother is now in the hospital battling congestive heart failure. My mom thought that she would pass on this morning. When I saw her later in the afternoon today, she was very funny and in good spirits. Her heart is weak, and she is ready to go, so it might be just a matter of time. It was definitely an emotional day today!
Lux in tenebris was my high school's motto, "light in the darkness," and there was a bit of that today. I must share with you a funny story she told me and my mom. She animatedly starting telling us how amazed she was at all of the technology in the hospital, and how efficient everyone was. An attendant came in this morning and asked her if she would like a shower. She said yes. They strapped her in a chair with casters (she has a broken pelvis) which locked down in the shower. She said that "The girl had this apron on with all of these pockets, with shampoo, scrub brushes, lotions, everything! The little chair rotated - and she just kept spinning me around and cleaning everything - and the water pressure was real good! I felt like I was a car, you know like I was in my own car wash!" (By this time, mom and I are in stitches) "So the girl said, let me get your back, and she scrubbed really hard, like I was dirty, but it was kinda nice, you know! Then she said "Do you want a shampoo?" so I said "Sure!" It felt like a car wash!"
Oh man she had us laughing.
It was good to see her like that. No matter what happens in the next few days, I feel good that we all got to share a laugh today.

Happy Birthday Renee!
I just got off the phone with my sister and she's enticed me to join her at her birthday shindig. There's booze (none for me - early to work!) and karaoke (non drunk karaoke - no no no) involved...oh dear.

One of the many reasons that I love blogs
One of the many blogs that I read, Abby Try Again, has been theme posting on beautiful films. I clicked on the link to check out Promises.
When I watched the trailer...
I was happy to find the whole film on YouTube. And a 2004 update with five of the seven children that appeared in the original film. It criticizes the Israeli-Palestine conflict through the eyes of the children that live it. It's a really fascinating, well done documentary. Thanks Abby!

*Live from Broadway Dance Center
We interupt this craft blog to bring you "Sarah geeking out on instructional dance videos"...
I was poking around Dancers International when I saw this video posted.
DESMOND RICHARDSON INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS!!! What!? What?! What!? AMAZING!
Okay, deep breaths, for those of you who don't know, Desmond Richardson is basically like a dance god. He is one of the most highly sought after, talented, gorgeous contemporary dancers of our time. I took class next to him one time and I thought I was going to fall over and die I was in such awe. The man is movement.
So, of course I want these videos. This led me to investigating Live at Broadway Dance Center, where I then saw a preview video for all of their class on tape offerings. If I had $1,000 bucks I could buy all 24! That's not happening any time soon!
I narrowed things down to about five videos that I can't with not owning now. Hmmm, still too much money. But this is exactly the kind of thing that I can justify spending Geek+Nerd profits on. I need to refill my creative well to invigorate my teaching - and getting away to a workshop just isn't in the cards for now. We'll see. I haven't decided on spend now or save for later.
I *do* want to go to Chicago during the summer - and I was going to try and get financial assistance from my work, but I don't think that it will happen. The workshop is $600 if I register before February 28th. Soooo, I've got 1/6th of that put aside.
Well - speaking of earning moolah - I have put a few more things in the shop. Two pairs of awesome socks knit from 100% wool from Riverslea Farm. Hint...hint...nudge...nudge...wink...wink...
*Or..."This post is a gigantic commercial to reverse Sarah's poverty problem. Regular posting will resume soon hopefully!"

SnB
Finally, I got to catch up with my Stitch n' Bitch group after Nutcracker and holiday craziness.
We met at one of our member's houses today, since she just had knee surgery and couldn't make it to the coffee shop.
My progress pictures on mitten #2 are very boring right now - so I took some fun knitting pictures.

Snow Day/NPR

The spring-like respite is definitely over, here in New England, and winter has returned with a vengeance. Happily my dance classes were cancelled for the day, Matt got half way to Portland and turned around because the roads were so bad, so we had a nice little snow day. Today was all about hibernation, relaxation, tea and cookies.
I have a bit of excitement for you! Matt and I were featured on a little story about the middle class in America on NPR - and you can now listen to it online. I was so nervous when Steve Tripoli interviewed us...but I think that we sound okay. I had a cold that day, so my voice is a little uncharacteristically husky, but oh well! Exciting nonetheless!

It's just the little things
WHOA - a hand crafted item. I know...I stopped dead in my tracks too! It's been awhile.

I so loved the thrummed mittens that I made my brother-in-law, Geoff, for Christmas, that I decided I had to have a pair myself. I very leisurely knit my way through this first one over Christmas break - hopefully I can speed through the second one a bit faster! I want toasty hands!!!
Today was a nice day. My mum came over and we knit over coffee, biscotti, and Suzi Blu videos, (thank you Diane).
I only had to teach one class tonight, which was a nice change of pace from the rest of the week, and then I met up for sushi at Sake with some of my co-workers. All in all a pretty decent day.
Tomorrow I get to meet a whole new class of three year olds at 9:00am! I love my job, I do, it's waking myself up and getting there that early that's a little irksome. No matter though, there's nothing like seeing a tiny babe give me a huge grin when I give them a sticker. Kiddos sure know how to appreciate the little things. Coffee, biscotti, fun YouTube, sushi, stickers...it's all the same!

Kitty Love and Shhtuff

Hobbes and Cassie...my kitty girls. They're usually mortal enemies, but occasionally they'll settle down together and cuddle.
Still no craftyness on this end...I've got a bit of a cold.
Also, if you think of it, could everyone send good thoughts my grandmother's way. She's 91 and she broke her pelvis and THEN she had a heart attack in the hospital. Last I knew she was in great spirits, so that's good. I think that's the best sign when people are hospitalized at her age. I've wanted to go and see her, but she's pretty frail and I don't want to give her any of my germs. So anyways...think happy thoughts for my Memere!

Oh the possibilites!

Tons of new fabric from Sew Mama Sew, one of my new favorite fabric stores. They also have a great blog with fun features and giveaways. The best thing though, is that their service is speedy, and you get a free button with every purchase!
I'm excited about the linen in this bundle. I got two colorways to work with. I've never worked with linen before, and I'm excited to incorporate it into my upcoming sewing projects!

Spring Awakening
When I was on my trip to Baltimore, my friend Rob gave me the cast recording of Spring Awakening so that I could finally see what all of the fuss has been about. I am in love! Duncan Sheik and strings galore - what's not to love about that kind of musical arrangements.
Spring Awakening is a very dark musical, from the sounds of it, based off of the 1891 Frank Wedekind play of the same name. It is music like this that makes me miss musical theatre.
I don't chat about this too much here on my blog, but my college degree is actually Theatre and Dance with Dance and Musical Theatre emphasises. My dance teaching is schedule is so batty that I haven't been able to do theatre for almost two years now. I miss it very much - especially the singing!
So, in lieu of my rusty Broadway pipes, I will leave you with this gem of a video. Duncan Sheik with Lauren Pritchard of Spring Awakening singing "Touch Me." I guarantee your jaw will drop the second this girl opens her mouth.
P.S. Totally random sidenote - Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon were sitting at the table across from me at the coffee shop this morning. The NH primary certainly brings out the celebs!

Eating "Real" Food
I just listened to an excellent interview via NPR with Michael Pollan, author of "In Defense of Food". My thanks go to the Slow Food Seacoast blog for bringing it to my attention.
I have not read his book, but one of Pollan's main points during the interview was that "real" food is often steeped in tradition. The food that our grandparents and great-grandparents ate was often grown, canned, prepared, preserved, cured right in the home. Over the past few years, cooking, meal-times and quality food has not been a priority in this country. Fortunately knowledge is power, and what many people are discovering, (and what I've discovered for myself), is that their not willing to trade saving a few dollars on disgusting processed food for poor health down the line. Personally, I'll take the yummy food and healthy life behind door number two, thanks!

Over the past few months I've been trying to use my time more wisely to cook from scratch more often. Sundays is a great day for me to prepare things ahead. One of my favorite things to have on hand is home made chicken stock. Once I made stock for myself, I vowed never to buy it in the store again. Not even the organic free-range stuff can match up to the deliciousness of home made stock!
What you might choose to put in your chicken stock will vary from mine, because of personal preferences and what you have in your kitchen. I won't share a recipe for stock here, but I thought I would share some of my stock-making tricks.
* I hate wasting food. Growing up my mom had a compost bin in our yard and we wasted little. Here at my apartment I'm not able to compost, but I can re-use vegetable scraps in my stock. Oftentimes when I cook, I'll end up with too many veggie scraps to use at once. So I've started freezing them. I just stuff the scraps into a tupperware container and when I'm ready to use them chip off chunks of veggie goodness. Your tupperware will look like it's filled with a nasty mixed veggie ice-cube, but trust me, it's good stuff.
* Speaking of ice cubes - freeze your leftover wine. My husband, Matt, is straight edge, so it is a rare occasion that I will crack open a bottle of wine just for myself. When I do I often have an enormous amount leftover. I freeze this into cubes to add to my cooking. This is great for other things besides stocks and soups...like add a cube or two to a stir fry, or for pan braising meat.
Cheers!

Friends + Rock Climbing = Good Times
These photos are from yesterday.
Jamie being crazy...

My husband being a rock star

Allison demonstrating the dancer advantage in rock climbing, flexibility

Matt teaching Allison how to belay me...

Matt and I hadn't gone climbing in quite awhile, and it was so much fun! I think that I'm going to invest some of our meager funds into a pass so that we can go more frequently. I really need to exercise more, and I enjoy climbing so much, even if I'm a novice! When I was a kid I was never good at any sports. Dance was definitely my athletic arena. When I climb I feel "athletic" as silly as that might sound. It's a nice feeling!

Baltimore RULES
When Matt and I embarked on our road trip for Christmas one of our main stops was Baltimore. I didn't know anything about the city, so I visited a trusted source for travel info, the Let's Go Girl section of BUST magazine's website. BUST did not disappoint!
We mainly explored one street in Hampden, our first stop being 9th Life. Here the funky silk screened t-shirts took centerstage. I snagged a curve hugging blue number with the store's name and a Native American pin-up girl on it. Pictures soon...
Next, one of my favorite shopping pasttimes, perusing a used book store for vintage dance books. I picked up this amazing hardcover about the Diaghilev era of the Ballet Russe:

Found this apron for six bucks at the three floor gloriousness that was Avenue Antiques

Then the highlight of the shopping trip...Atomic Books and it's sister store Atomic Pop. It's fabulousness truly deserves it's own post. More self-published zines than I had ever seen in my life. I went a little crazy...

Picture: Volume one and two of Persepolis, (I read it in a day - it's pretty amazing), Scrappy Zine, Making Stuff and Doing Things, The Anti 9-5 Guide, My Paper Crane Milk Plush, re-usable shopping bag with a skull and cross bones and apparently a big ole' leaf of weed, which I did not notice when I bought it. Hopefully my students won't either!
I could have spent days just on this one street. I had to resist the call of the knitting shop this time. Hampden seemed like such a cool arty community - I can't wait to return!

Locked out
I locked myself out of my house today - on possibly the coldest day ever. Awesome.
This however meant that I got to go eat delicious Japanese food with two good friends. Awesome.
I'm exhausted - and thus far my posts for the year aren't too terribly crafty or wordy. Not so awesome...
but I'll work on it!

Happy New Years!
Happy New Years everyone! I have such high hopes for 2008!
I'm really tired right now from all of the New Year's Eve festivities, and travelling, but I wanted to get a post in today. I'm considering trying to participate in Blog 365 this year. I feel almost assuredly that I will fall off the bandwagon on THAT one, but it might be nice incentive to try and blog everyday.
I managed to drag myself out of bed to see something so cool today...The Metropolitan Opera is broadcasting certain productions from their season at movie theatres all over the United States. The highest quality opera, affordable tickets, right in your hometown. You can get more information here. Today I saw Hansel and Gretel, which was just great. The production was modernized from the traditional fairy tale, and it came off as a creepy crawly kind of Sweeney Todd for children, if that makes any sense! I'm really looking forward to upcoming productions, and learning more about opera.
That's it for me today. I still have so many photos to upload from my trip and so many things to say, resolutions to make and break, but I'll save it for tomorrow!
Cheers - S

Cheers - S
